Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
